November Monthly Meeting

November 11th, 2008

Minutes of the November 4, 2008 Monthly meeting of the

AMERICAN PONTIAC ASSOCIATION

The meeting was held at the Hickory Hollow Restaurant, 101 Heights Blvd. @ Center St.

Sal Escamilla, President, called the meeting to order at ~7:30 pm, welcoming everyone in attendance.

Sal commented that this was Presidential Election Day with potentially historical significance depending on the outcome.

Sal called on Mike Kern, Events Coordinator, to summarize upcoming events. Club members are invited to checkout the following web site for a comprehensive list of upcoming car shows, events and flyers: http://niftee50ees.com/ You can also visit the Space City Cruisers web site for a running, quick list of future car shows/events from the APA website. In the future only key APA Club events will be documented below.

DATE TITLE LOCATION

November 16th Display Work & Load Party Vince’s Welling’s,
November 26th to 30th AutoRama Auto Show George R. Brown Convention Center
December 6th APA Christmas Party Mike Kern’s house

March 21st APA Spring Car Show Pier 1, Galveston Island

Sal recapped everyone on the Annual APA Halloween Bash. There was a low turnout but those that were there had a good time with great costumes as well as food and drink.

Financials were next discussed by Harry Farley, APA Treasurer. The October bank statement had not been received as of the November meeting date. Harry said there were no withdrawals and only one deposit for $24.00 so the balance should be approximately $1,629.82. We also discussed beginning to take 2009 club dues at the discounted rate of $20.00. This rate is in effect through the APA Annual Banquet in January 2009.

Sal next discussed the upcoming AutoRama at the George R. Brown Convention Center over Thanksgiving. AutoRama runs from Wednesday, November 26th through Sunday, November 30th. We have 6 cars confirmed with one back-up. Members showing their cars include Lindsey Duncan’s 1984 Fiero, Luis Martinez 88’ Fiero, Glenn Duncan’s 71’ Trans Am, Bruce Tharp’s 71’ Trans Am, Jimmy Braud’s 70 ½’ Trans Am and Howard Sandoz 57’ Super Chief with Harry Farley’s 66’ GTO back-up. Sal reminded everyone that the cars will be judged on ISCA rules so bring your gas, oil and water cans, fire extinguisher (no flares), first aid kit and any car signs/history. You should have less than a quarter tank of gas with the gas opening taped and the battery disconnected. Sal had drawn out how he wants the cars placed and Larry West made a copy. We will use the same car lot theme. Sal is to bring the music, wooden Indian and APA banner. Harry is to bring a vacuum cleaner and Randy to bring application forms. Two people are desired at the display each day. Need everyone to help tear the display down Sunday night.

We will meet at Vince’s in Alvin at 10am on Sunday, November 16th to upgrade the display. We will add additional protective aluminum edges to the bottom of the light boxes to protect the tile edge. After some discussion we will also load the display on the 16th. We will unload at the G. R. Brown, Tues. Nov. 25th, 4pm to 6pm.

The Wings and Wheels Event held October 18th at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum at Hobby Airport was a great success. The APA Car Club was the featured car club during the event and we had a great turnout and time at the museum. We had nine members’ cars on display in front of the museum. Members showing their cars included: Sal Escamilla with his 1969 Chevy Pick-up, Donna and Eric Escamilla with their 71’ Pontiac Formula Firebird, Mike Kern with his 1942 Chevy Pick-up, Bruce Tharp’s 71’ Pontiac Trans Am, Bob Adam’s 1972 Pontiac Formula Firebird, Steve Elliott’s 71’ Pontiac Trans Am, Luis Martinez 88’ Pontiac Fiero, Larry West’s 74’ Pontiac Ventura and Vince Welling’s 65’ Pontiac Bonneville limousine. Aircraft on display included a DC-3 painted in Continental Airlines livery with full interior, a camouflaged C-47 and the museums Lockheed Lodestar. Club members also received a tour of the center of the terminal under restoration as well as the upper floors and culminated in the old control tower and the catwalk outside the control tower with a great view of Hobby Airport. Many thanks to Megan Lickliter from the 1940 Air Terminal who conducted the tour and was our hostess for the day. The Hobbyfest was re-scheduled to April 18th and the Club agreed to tentatively show our cars again on that date. We will check the schedule and make sure we have no other conflict on that date. Randy to confirm and coordinate with Megan.

The Niftee50’s Halloween Car Show was held on October 25th. The car show is held in the parking lot at Spring Cypress and Champion Forest. Mike Kern drove his new orange, with green flames, 1942 Chevy pick-up, Randy drove Mike’s 1966 Pontiac Tempest convertible and Sal, Donna and Eric met them at the new Steak and Shake restaurant on 1960. They then caravanned to the Car Show. There were 511 cars at the show with a lot of folks and kids wearing Halloween costumes. We actually met Kirk Robinson there who is one of the founding members of the APA. He is moving to El Paso. The last Niftee50’s Car Show for 2008 will be held Saturday, November 15th.

Everyone was reminded that the APA Christmas Party will be held Saturday, December 6th at Mike Kern’s house. It is BYOB.

Larry G. reported that the APA website received 77,434 hits in October. Omar has set up an FTP account so pictures and other data can be uploaded more frequently. He will also give Randy access so he can upload the minutes directly to the web site. Harry to send Omar a $100.00 check for web site support and other expenses.

With no further business, Sal adjourned the meeting.

Next month’s meeting will be December 2nd, 2008.

Wings and Wheels event at the 1940 Air Terminal at Hobby Airport

Folks,
Due to Hurricane Ike things have changed quite a bit. The windows in the old control tower blew out and a hanger door came off but they are open. The air terminal museum is a classic Art Deco design. A lot of sponsors and aircraft have canceled but it is still being held as a regular monthly event. The museums Lodestar will be on dispay as well as a DC-3 and a C-47 variant used as a gunship in early Vietnam called a Spooky. Other aircraft may elect to show up that day.

We encourage all APA Club Members to wear their aqua APA T-shirts and bring out their classic cars (Doesn’t have to be a Pontiac). The cars will be on display in front of the museum with the aircraft on the flightline behind. Members showing a car will have the entry fee picked up by the club. APA members coming but not displaying a car will pay half price, $5.00. Note that entry fee includes lunch with drink. Normal entry fee is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids and museum members. The museum is located on the west side of Hobby Airport, just east of Telephone Road. Look for the current, tall control tower which is a short block to the west of the museum.

Note: Some members showing cars are meeting at Pappa’s (Used to be the BBQ place where we used to hold our monthly meetings) on the feeder road on I45 close to Hobby at 8:30am and then we will caravan to the museum. Note: Pappa’s is not open for breakfast-my mistake.

Dear APA members,

I would like to thank you for making donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in my daughter’s name. We have been living with diabetes since before she was two.

Maintenance of this disease for me means constantly pricking her finger to draw blood samples for blood/glucose monitoring. Getting up at 2AM everyday to do a blood/glucose test without waking her. Giving insulin injections twice a day: Making adjustments to the insulin amounts. Making 4 visits a year to the endocrinologist. Hoping what you do will be enough.

The holidays are especially challenging. Each one is filled with cookies and candy. Imagine being a kid and not being able to eat your Halloween candy. I remember the day Sabrina was diagnosed with diabetes. It was a week before Halloween. I spent the weekend at Texas Children’s Hospital in a state of shock as to what was happening. When we came home diabetes management was now part of our life.

On that first Halloween after being diagnosed, Sabrina and I went trick-or-treating. We collected a bunch of candy. One of the hardest things I’ve had to explain was why we couldn’t eat a bunch of that candy. After we came home I’ll bet we spent an hour looking at it all. Counting each piece. Segregating them by type. Deciding which ones she would eat first.

Most of the time I handle everything as if it’s a duty that has to be done. Once in a while it all catches up to me and I have to breakdown. This is something little kids shouldn’t have to live with. Yet there are so many that face it everyday just as we do.

Thank you for supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Maybe someday there will be something more than just management in our future.

Blowin’ Smoke
A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
Hey everyone; as Sal has already said, the Spring car show was a huge success. As the D.J., I was fortunate that several classic artists released new and unique CDs the past year. This gave me a new playing field for my “Guess the Artist” feature. A correct guess wins that person a door prize, and we had some nice ones. Thanks to all who contributed. Also, thanks to Larry West, Mike Kern, and Luis Martinez for their assistance in getting my equipment up and going. That’s a large area to cover with sound.
I was hoping to get this out before the APA Picnic at Resoft Park here in Alvin, but it just didn’t happen. We had a nice turnout of members; kind of hot but a good breeze was blowing. New member Luis Martinez brought his family and new members Rusty & Kay Burch showed up with their `70 GTO.
On the home front, I finally found a front disk brake conversion for the Limo! Those of you with “A” and “F” bodied cars don’t know what it’s like trying to find suspension upgrades for the full size “B” bodies, they just don’t exist. An outfit called “Direct Fit Brakes” in Glendale, Arizona will put together a complete kit to fit your needs, from booster to rotors, for around $800 bucks. Most parts are factory “off the shelf” components. Let me tell you, I’ve messed with oversized Pontiacs a long time and I can’t imagine how nice it will be to have decent brakes on that car! I also put a new set of headers on it. These, a superior four tube design instead of three tube; took one day to install and two days trying to tighten the bolts! Some bolts I got from the top, some from the bottom, and some from inside the wheel wells, and I still have leaks. Thank God I now have a lift to work with! Next steps will be a front end rebuild and a set of custom chrome 16″ Rallye II’s from Wheel Viniques, then, maybe, a repaint..
I’d like to welcome some new members: Jimmy Braud, ‘70 Trans Am; Juan Molina, ‘87 Trans Am; Rusty & Kay Burch, ‘70 GTO, and Luis Martinez, ‘88 Fiero.
In closing, and on behalf of all club members, I would like to offer our sincerest condolences to Mike Kern on the recent loss of his father.
That’s it from here,
Vince Welling, V.P. & Editor

Smoke Signals
A MESSAGE FROM THE ‘PREZ.
Well, it’s been a long time since the last message, and we have had a few things happen since. Of course the biggest (and best) news was our Spring car show in Galveston. We could not have asked for a more perfect day or turn out! The sun was out, the winds were blowing, the music was rocking and the cars just kept on coming! We hosted almost 120 cars for this show, and had lots of help from our members, old and new, to make this happen. Registration, judging and awards all ran smoothly and the 50/50 jar brought in over $600.00! Thanks to EVERYONE for all your help and participation, working together we had what can only be described as ‘Our best show ever’!
I If ist the rest of our summer club activities in date order this should make it easy for everyone to mark their cale dars-hint, hint).
June 1- Our next event is the APA Family picnic on Sunday. It will be held at Resolf Park in Alvin at 1 10am. The club will sponsor hamburgers, hot dogs i and soft drinks. This is a great place to bring out both the love ones and your family too! There is a fishing pond, children’s playground, restrooms and lots of field for baseball, football or volleyball, and of course the nice breeze under the pavilion makes a wonderful spot for a nice afternoon nap! Don’t forget your lawn chairs, bug spray and dessert.
June 6-8 The Pontiac Southern Nationals will be held in San Antonio. A few of us are planning on going, so if anyone is interested please give me a call for more details or to make arrangements to drive out there as a ‘club’. We will be leaving on Friday and retuming on Sunday morning.
Note- If you happen to attend one of the several car shows going on this summer, please take some pictures and send them to Larry G. to post on the website.
Well, I guess that’s all for now, hope to see everyone at the picnic and in San Antonio, if not see you guys at f the next meeting.
Yours truly- “Big Chief’ Sal Escamilla

APA Annual Family Picnic

May 29th, 2008

APA Annual Family Picnic

The 2008 APA family picnic will be held once again at Resoft Park in Alvin. The Park is located on Highway 35 just north of Alvin between Alvin and Pearland. When going south on 35, take Cornete Road at the stoplight on 35 and go right, west. If you are coming through Friendswood toward Alvin take a right at the light at Moore Road and go west. This road terminates at Highway 35 and you will be looking at Resoft Park. Make a right and proceed to the light at Cornete and make a left and follow instructions as stated above. The Park entrance is about 300 yards from the stop light on the left. We have reserved the Nolan Ryan pavilion which is the first one you come to. Our usual pavilion was already reserved. The Park has fishing ponds with lots of wild geese, ducks and other birds. It also has softball diamonds, basketball courts, volleyball court, soccer fields and asphalted paths for bicycling or skating. In addition, there is a man made hill with a Super playground for the kid’s including covered and un-covered slides, tunnel, swings, and other play equipment. Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, drinks and condiments will be provided. Please bring a covered dish or dessert that will feed 24 people. Don’t forget to bring the sunscreen, if going to be outside the pavilion, bug spray and additional lawn chairs or sporting equipment as you see fit. Please exercise that wonderful Pontiac and bring it out for display.

This APA Club sponsored event is for kids young and old so come on out and have some fun.
